The GC election results are in, and PayFi momentum is building. The newly elected members are set to steer Concordium’s vision to further excel decentralization and help drive PayFi innovation.

The Concordium community has spoken! Last week the 2025 Governance Committee (GC) elections officially concluded, and the elected members have embraced the task to represent a pivotal step forward in shaping the network’s decentralized and PayFi-focused future. A big warm congratulations to Borja Burguillos – tech entrepreneur and founder of AEDX & 5TARS.io–who received a total of 438,694,406 weighted votes, and Niels H. Sørensen– co-founder of Provenance Tags and a pioneer in high-scale, real-world blockchain deployment–who led the vote count with 470,812,005 weighted votes (see full results here).

“I’m honored and humbled to be elected to the Concordium Governance Committee. I look forward to collaborating with fellow community members to drive transparent, community-first decisions and help shape the future of the Concordium ecosystem.” – Borja Burguillos

“Thank you to everyone who voted. I’m honored to be elected, and deeply grateful for the trust shown. I’m going into this with humility and a strong sense of responsibility. I look forward to working with the rest of the GC members and the wider community to build a stronger and more valuable Concordium for all.”  –Niels H. Sørensen

We caught up with Borja and Niels shortly after the election to discuss their vision, motivation, and what’s next for Concordium’s governance framework and broader ecosystem.

From Builder to Board: Borja’s Path to the GC

Q: What inspired you to run for a Concordium GC seat?

Borja: I’ve spent around 15 years building tech in both Web2 and Web3. What drew me to Concordium was its compliance-first design, and its focus on real-world utility. I’m fully on board with moving away from speculation to build things that matter.

Q: What’s your connection to Concordium, and how can you support its PayFi vision?

Borja: I lead 5STARS.io, a Web3 fantasy sports platform, and AEDX, a UAE Dirham-pegged stablecoin promoting financial inclusion. Both projects recently migrated to Concordium early this year. As an experienced leader in Web2 and Web3 tech, I can help bridge the gap between real-world finance logic and blockchain infrastructure, which is at the heart of Concordium’s PayFi mission.

Q:  What’s your governance vision?

Borja: Governance should enable growth, not block it. I want to launch vertical working groups around PayFi, gaming and identity, for example, to enable builders to co-create proposals.

Q: And on tokenomics?

Borja: We need to reward adoption. This means rolling out incentives like lower gas fees, grants and improved developer tooling to make building frictionless, all of which will attract high-value projects to the chain. Liquidity incentives are also essential for boosting CCD’s utility across different ecosystems.

Q: What would you like to see next on Concordium?

Borja: With ZKP-based identity and compliance-features built in, I’d like to see Concordium become the default chain for reputation-based finance, thriving as a trusted leader for regulated DeFi and PayFi.

Building at Scale: Niels on Real-World Adoption and Decentralization

Q: Tell us about yourself  and your association with Concordium?

Niels: I’m the co-founder of Provenance Tags, which was launched on Concordium in 2022. Since then we’ve processed over 50 million transactions, and minted over a million NFTs for real-world use cases in various industries, including wine, pharma, and logistics. The project relies on Concordium’s privacy-first blockchain infrastructure to power traceability and authentication.

Q: How does your work align with Concordium’s PayFi mission and your role as a GC?

Niels: We’re building programmable e-fulfilment that integrates stablecoin payments, yield transit, and ZKP-based identity verification. These features directly align with the network’s compliance-first approach, and show its potential to power trusted real-world applications. As a GC member, I’ll advocate for protocol decisions that support builders like us.

Q: Why did you want to become a GC member?

Niels: Real-world builders like us need a seat at the table. I’ve seen what works outside the lab, and I wanted to align governance with actual deployment needs to keep adoption, utility, and protocol evolution in sync.

Q: What’s your goal for governance and the future of Concordium?

Niels: To make Concordium governance inclusive, transparent, and driven by people building at scale. I also want to help shape a future where Concordium becomes the go-to infrastructure for enterprise-grade blockchain adoption.
